Exeter: A new vaccination center is opening soon. It will help people at higher risk of mpox, which was once called monkeypox. Health officials announced this exciting news recently.
Now, there are 12 new vaccination sites across England. This means more people can get vaccinated. Before this, only 19 locations in London, Brighton, and Manchester offered the vaccine.
The NHS is providing mpox vaccines to those at higher risk. This includes men with multiple partners and those in same-sex relationships. In October, a new strain of mpox was found in England.
This discovery came after the government ordered more vaccine doses. They want to be ready for any future cases of mpox.
Steve Russell from the NHS said they are prepared to handle mpox cases. Many people in priority groups have already received their vaccines. He encourages eligible individuals to get vaccinated at the new sites.
Symptoms of mpox include a rash, fever, headache, and muscle aches. The rash can appear one to five days after other symptoms start.
Mpox spreads through direct contact with rashes or skin lesions. It can also spread through bodily fluids and close contact with infected individuals.
Dr. Sema Mandal from the UK Health Security Agency is pleased about the new vaccination sites. They offer vital protection for those at highest risk.
If you notice any unusual symptoms, seek medical advice and stay home. Vaccination is key to preventing the spread of mpox.
The 12 new locations are:
- Birmingham, West Midlands
- Nottingham
- Sheffield, South Yorkshire
- Sunderland, Tyne and Wear
- Hull, East Yorkshire
- Leeds, West Yorkshire
- Liverpool, Merseyside
- Blackpool, Lancashire
- Southampton, Hampshire
