Dulwich: So, there’s some good news for families dealing with loss. An MP, Helen Hayes, is really stepping up to help bereaved families who are being chased by landlords for rent. It’s about time, right?
She’s been on this since July after a heartbreaking case in her area. A family lost their son to suicide, and then they were hit with demands for rent payments. Can you imagine? They signed a lease, and then tragedy struck before he even moved in.
Helen said it’s just not fair for families to go through that. They shouldn’t have to deal with landlords wanting money when they’re already grieving. Landlords can get insurance for these situations, so there’s no reason to put more pressure on families.
This week, she pushed for changes to the Renters’ Rights Bill, aiming to make sure that if a tenant dies, their family isn’t stuck with the bill. The idea is that landlords should handle the lost rent through their insurance.
And guess what? Her amendments got a lot of support from everyone in the House of Commons. She’s really grateful for that and is happy the government is finally taking action to protect families.
Renters in Dulwich and West Norwood have been struggling for too long with high rents and bad conditions. Helen is proud to back this new Bill, which is set to bring major changes to the rental market.
The Renters’ Rights Bill is a big deal, introducing the most significant reforms in over thirty years. It’ll ban those annoying ‘no fault’ evictions and tackle rental bidding wars, plus improve living standards for tenants.
It’s a step in the right direction for renters, and it’s about time they got some real protections!
