MP Urges Action to Protect Kids from Stream Infections
An MP is calling for urgent measures to improve water quality and protect children from infections caused by playing in contaminated streams

Monmouthshire: So, there’s this MP, Catherine Fookes, who’s really concerned about the water quality in the UK. She recently had a debate in Westminster about how bad things have gotten, especially in her area.
She pointed out that parents are worried sick about letting their kids play in local streams or rivers. They fear their kids might catch infections or come across something gross like sewage or wet wipes.
Fookes highlighted that the rivers, like the Wye and Usk, are in pretty bad shape. There’s a lot of phosphate pollution, which is causing algal blooms that are harming fish and plants.
In fact, she mentioned that the Usk is one of the most polluted rivers in the UK, with a shocking amount of phosphate pollution. It’s a real mess, and she’s calling for urgent action to tackle the main culprits, like agricultural runoff and sewage discharge.
She did give a nod to some government efforts, like the Water Special Measures Bill, which aims to deal with illegal sewage dumping. But she insists that more needs to be done, especially regarding agricultural pollution.
Fookes made it clear that the current situation is a tough legacy left by previous governments. She believes it’s going to take a lot of work to clean up the rivers, lakes, and seas and fix the broken system.
