Selkirk: So, there’s been quite a stir lately. An MP is pushing for Stuart Hogg, the Scotland rugby captain, to lose his MBE. Why? Well, he admitted to abusing his ex-partner, which is pretty serious stuff.
Stephen Flynn, the SNP Westminster leader, brought this up during a session in Parliament. He pointed out that domestic abuse shouldn’t be rewarded, and honestly, who could argue with that?
Earlier this week, Flynn also shared his thoughts on social media, and even Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, agreed that it’s a reasonable request. Hogg was sentenced to a community payback order after admitting to five years of abuse towards his estranged wife, Gillian.
This all went down at Selkirk Sheriff Court, where Hogg, who’s 32, pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse last November. He admitted to some pretty alarming behavior, like tracking her movements and sending distressing messages.
In Parliament, Flynn made it clear that Hogg’s MBE should be reconsidered. Lucy Powell, the Leader of the House, echoed that sentiment, saying domestic abuse is unacceptable and shouldn’t be rewarded.
She mentioned that while she can’t comment on individual cases, there’s a committee that looks into these matters. So, it seems like this issue is far from over.
