London: The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) has shared some eye-opening stats. They found that a whopping 85% of grooming gang offences are committed by white men. This data comes from the first three quarters of 2024, and it’s pretty similar to what we saw in 2023, where 83% of offenders were also white.

Richard Fewkes, who heads up the NPCC’s Hydrant programme, mentioned that there’s no major issue tied to any specific ethnicity or setting. This comes after Elon Musk stirred the pot on social media, criticizing the government’s handling of grooming gangs. He even accused the Prime Minister of being “complicit in the rape of Britain.”

During a recent press briefing, Fewkes emphasized that the data reflects what you’d expect across the country. He pointed out that grooming gang offences are mostly linked to white individuals. The NPCC is planning to use this data to help train new officers and improve their approach at a local level.

Interestingly, there’s been a lot of chatter lately about the involvement of Pakistani men in these crimes. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has called for an investigation into this issue. In 2023, the data showed that 83% of child sexual abuse suspects were white, while only 2.7% were Pakistani.

When you look at the numbers for group-based child sexual exploitation, the figures are still skewed towards white suspects. However, it’s worth noting that the NPCC admitted the data isn’t complete, with ethnicity information available for only about a third of suspects in 2023.

Fewkes also pointed out that the recent focus on grooming gangs has overshadowed other forms of child sexual abuse, especially those happening within families. According to reports, grooming gangs are responsible for two child sexual abuse offences reported to police every day.

In 2023, there were over 4,200 reported offences of group-based child sexual abuse, which is just a small fraction of the total child sexual abuse crimes. Meanwhile, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that the government will start implementing mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse, following recommendations from Professor Alexis Jay.

With all this going on, the political landscape is heating up. Musk’s comments have sparked a lot of debate in Westminster, with accusations of misinformation flying around. The Conservatives have criticized Labour MPs for not doing enough for victims of grooming gangs, especially after their amendment for a national inquiry was shot down.

As the government moves forward with new measures, it’s clear that this issue is far from resolved, and many are watching closely to see what happens next.
