Birmingham: It’s been named one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians. Can you believe it? The city landed at number six, with a staggering 54.23 casualties per 100,000 people.

Blackpool took the top spot, being the most hazardous for pedestrians, with 63.83 casualties per 100,000. London wasn’t far behind, coming in fourth with 59.30.

With Birmingham just two spots below London, it’s pretty alarming. Campaigners are pushing for better road safety. The data comes from Ovoko, who looked at pedestrian injury stats from 2013 to 2022.

A spokesperson from Ovoko mentioned that crossing the street in busy cities can feel like a gamble. Fast traffic, unclear signs, and few crossings make it tough for walkers.

Groups like Better Streets for Birmingham have been advocating for serious changes. They want the council and local authorities to invest more in road safety and enforce speed limits better.

Back in September, they expressed that people in the second city are unsure if they’ll make it home safely. Martin Price, co-chair of the group, shared how heartbreaking it is to hear about more injuries and fatalities on the roads.

Other cities in the top ten include Liverpool, Blackburn with Darwen, and Nottingham, all with high casualty rates. It’s a serious issue that needs attention.
