Wigan: So, there’s this huge campaign going on, right? More than 75,000 folks have rallied behind the Manchester Evening News to honor Caroline Gore and push for some serious changes in the law.

Caroline, who was just 44, was tragically murdered by her partner, David Liptrot, last October. He had a history of abusing her and had even been let off with a suspended sentence for breaching a restraining order just weeks before he killed her. It’s heartbreaking.

The M.E.N. is really stepping up, calling for tougher penalties for anyone who ignores these protective orders. They want a mandatory minimum prison sentence for offenders, which seems totally fair given what happened.

After the campaign got some attention in Parliament, local MPs, including Jo Platt, have been backing it. They’re pushing for a debate to strengthen the laws around these protective orders, which is a big deal.

Even Greater Manchester’s mayor, Andy Burnham, is on board, along with various domestic abuse charities. They’re all working together to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.

Caroline’s daughter, Megan, has also spoken out, supporting the campaign just like her sister did earlier. It’s great to see the family’s strength in such a tough time.

Recently, the safeguarding minister, Jess Phillips, mentioned that this campaign could actually lead to some real changes. They’re trialing new Domestic Abuse Protection Orders in Greater Manchester, starting in Bury.

These new orders are different because they can last for any length of time and might even include requirements for the abuser, like electronic monitoring. It’s a step in the right direction, and they’re rolling it out across the region soon.

As of last week, there were already seven people under these new orders in Greater Manchester, and it looks like they’re serious about enforcing them. One guy even got eight months in jail for breaching his order. It’s about time!
