Edinburgh: Victims of youth violence had their voices heard at Bute House yesterday. It was the second summit held by the Scottish Government to address the alarming rise in assaults against teens, many of which are shared on social media.

It’s crucial for young people to share their experiences. The First Minister deserves a shout-out for taking time to meet with these young Scots. The Record has been pushing for action through our ongoing campaign, Our Kids… Our Future.

We’ve highlighted the need to protect community spaces for kids, especially with public service cutbacks. Plus, we’ve called out social media companies for not acting fast enough to remove harmful content.

By 2025, it should be totally unacceptable to film classmates being attacked. Parents and teachers need to remind students to keep their phones away during class.

Sure, playground fights have always been around, but now bullies can film their attacks, making things even worse for their victims. Events like yesterday’s summit are key to getting this issue noticed by politicians, but we need to do more to ensure every student feels safe at school.
