Cottingham: Four more strike days are happening at Cottingham High School this week. The strikes started in January due to worries about teacher redundancies.

The school might close its Sixth Form in 2025, which has raised concerns. The NEU union announced strike days for February 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Headteacher Mr. Jay Kerby informed parents that 70% of lessons are still running. He mentioned that the school must remain open for as many students as possible during strikes.

Mr. Kerby also noted that there’s no legal requirement to teach the curriculum on strike days. The school is trying to find a resolution through negotiations.

Two teaching positions are at risk of redundancy. The NEU wants a guarantee against this, but Mr. Kerby said that promise is unrealistic.

A concerned parent expressed frustration about the ongoing strikes. They said lessons are not running as normal, despite the school’s claims of smooth operations.

Steve Scott from the NEU said teachers don’t want to strike but feel they must for the future of education at Cottingham High School.

The Consortium Academy Trust, which oversees the school, declined to comment when approached.
