Sydney: A synagogue in Southern Sydney was hit hard by vandals who spray-painted swastikas and anti-Semitic slurs. It’s being called a “monstrous act” by many.
The police were on patrol as part of Operation Shelter when they found the Southern Sydney Synagogue vandalized around 4:30 AM on Friday. It was a shocking sight.
George Foster, the synagogue’s president, got a call from the police about the incident. He mentioned that the Jewish community is feeling pretty shaken up and uncertain right now.
He expressed concerns that this could escalate beyond graffiti into something more violent, which has happened in other places before.
In the past, this synagogue has faced similar attacks. Back in 1991, it was firebombed, and in 2002, it was also vandalized. After the firebombing, they had to install metal bars on the windows, which is just sad.
Mr. Foster shared his frustration, saying, “How is it that I have to pray in a building with bars on the window? It doesn’t seem right.” But he’s determined not to let this bring them down.
He’s also the president of the Australian Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants, and he said the graffiti reminded him of dark times in history.
One neighbor woke up to find his car covered in hateful graffiti aimed at the Jewish community. He felt it was disgusting and that there’s no place for such behavior in Australia.
Premier Chris Minns, who lives nearby, condemned the act, calling it a “monstrous act” and highlighting the hate behind it. He emphasized that this kind of vandalism is unacceptable.
He also mentioned that the government is committed to strengthening laws to prevent hate crimes like this. It’s clear that the community stands against such actions.
Police are on the case, with Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna stating they have leads and are reviewing CCTV footage. They’re taking this seriously and want to catch those responsible.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also spoke out, saying there’s no place for such hate in Australia. He stressed the importance of respect and inclusivity in our multicultural society.
