Birkdale: A woman had a terrifying close call with a train. She stepped past a barrier at a level crossing just as a 60mph train zoomed by. Thankfully, she swayed back just in time, realizing the danger she was in.
This incident highlights the risks at level crossings. It comes after warnings about drivers ignoring lowered barriers. Network Rail is now urging everyone to be extra careful at these crossings.
Simon Shipperd, a level crossing manager, said he’s never seen a near miss this close. He noted that the woman seemed unaware of her surroundings, possibly distracted. Safety is crucial, and pedestrians must be vigilant near level crossings.
British Transport Police’s Chief Inspector Jamie McGowan emphasized that misusing level crossings is unacceptable. Ignoring safety procedures endangers lives, including those of train passengers and staff. He urged people to report any unsafe behavior.
The near miss happened on January 24 at the Crescent Road level crossing in Birkdale. The woman ignored warning lights and sounds, coming within half a second of being hit by the train.
Network Rail stressed the importance of following safety signals. With nearly 6,000 level crossings in Britain, safety is a top priority. Over £200 million has been spent on improving safety since 2009.
To raise awareness, Network Rail launched the “You’ve crossed the line” campaign. This initiative aims to educate the public about the dangers at footpath level crossings.
