Newcastle Emlyn: So, there was this wild incident where a 17-year-old driver crashed into a Jaguar while trying to show off for a girl. Can you believe it? The whole thing was caught on video, and it’s pretty shocking.
The kid, Gareth Jones, was behind the wheel of a white Dacia, speeding around a corner when he lost control. He was going 49 mph, which is way too fast for that bend. The crash was intense, and all three people involved ended up seriously hurt.
The Jaguar driver tried to dodge the collision but couldn’t avoid it. After the crash, Jones apologized and admitted he was driving too fast. He had only passed his driving test three months earlier, so you can imagine how reckless that was.
This all went down on May 30, and now, at 19, Jones has pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A judge really laid into him, calling his driving “stupid” and “utterly ridiculous.”
The Jaguar driver initially didn’t want medical help but later went to the hospital. He ended up with a bleed on the brain, which is super serious. Jones himself was in the hospital for 17 days and had to undergo surgery.
His female passenger wasn’t spared either; she suffered some pretty nasty injuries, including a laceration to her liver. She had to wear a back brace for three months and said the whole experience was overwhelming.
Both victims are dealing with emotional issues now, too. The Jaguar driver feels anxious on the road, and the passenger has had trouble sleeping and even had to drop out of college because of it.
In court, Jones’ lawyer said he knows he messed up big time. The judge could have sent him to jail for three years but decided to suspend the sentence because of his age. Instead, he got 18 months of community service and a three-year driving ban.
It’s a tough lesson learned, but hopefully, he’ll think twice before trying to impress anyone behind the wheel again.
