The heartbreaking incident happened on Australia Day in 2020 when a stolen car struck Matthew Field and his pregnant partner, Kate Leadbetter. They were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child, Miles. The driver, just 17 years old, received a six-year prison sentence for the crash.
Russell Field’s speech was a heartfelt tribute to his family. He expressed how much they meant to him and emphasized that Miles, though never born, should be recognized as part of their family. He shared, “He lives in my heart and (my wife) Ann’s too.”
Field also honored other victims of youth crime, showing his commitment to advocating for justice. He thanked his supporters and made it clear that he intends to represent everyone fairly. He stated, “Politics is not a game to me, it’s real life,” highlighting the serious nature of his role.
With a touch of humor, he mentioned his age and how unlikely it was for him to be in parliament. He reflected on his past and the lessons learned from his parents about facing adversity.
Field also paid tribute to his eldest son, Andrew, who passed away from brain cancer. He expressed gratitude for the love and support he has received from the community, promising to honor the memory of his family through his work in parliament. He decided to run for office after feeling let down by the previous government’s approach to youth crime, aiming to make a difference for the people of Capalaba.
