Mira Bhayandar: So, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation just kicked off this cool program called “Swachhta ki Paathshala.” It’s all about teaching kids how to keep their surroundings clean and why waste segregation is super important.
They held the first two sessions at a couple of schools, and it was a hit! The municipal commissioner, Sanjay Katkar, and some other officials were there, chatting with the students and teachers. Everyone got involved, which was great to see.
During the sessions, they talked about hygiene, cleanliness, and how to sort waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories. They even had a fun Q&A where students could ask questions and show what they learned.
Katkar mentioned that they want to get students on board because they can really make a difference. He was pleased to see that many kids answered questions correctly during the session. That’s a good sign!
Now, here’s the thing: the city generates a ton of garbage—over 550 tonnes! Plus, there’s more from industries and medical waste. But the problem is that only about 78% of waste is being sorted at the source, which is a bit worrying for the local government.
To tackle this, they’ve also started a project called segregation 100@home. It uses QR codes to keep track of waste collection. When the garbage collectors come, they scan a code at each house to check if the waste is sorted properly. If not, they take pictures to report it. Pretty smart, right?
