OTTAWA: So, here’s the scoop. Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan just announced that a bunch of firefighters from Alberta and British Columbia are heading to California to tackle those raging wildfires. The federal government is teaming up with the provinces to get everything organized.
According to Sajjan, they’re sending 60 firefighters starting Monday, and they’re also looking to gather more resources in the coming days. He shared on social media that “Our American friends have asked for help,” and it’s all about “Neighbours helping neighbours.” Pretty heartwarming, right?
A spokesperson confirmed that Canada got an official request for assistance, and they’re on it. Alberta is sending up to 40 wildland firefighters, plus some extra personnel, waterbombers, and even night-vision helicopters if needed.
Meanwhile, B.C. has already sent a crew to California to help out with the wildfires near Los Angeles. And let’s not forget Quebec, which is also sending two firefighting aircraft after one of their planes had a little mishap with a drone while working on the fires.
These crews usually head to California every fall as part of a long-standing contract. Sadly, the fires have been deadly, with 16 lives lost and around 150,000 people in Los Angeles County under evacuation orders.
Alberta’s Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen reassured everyone on social media that their firefighters are well-trained and ready to support California’s efforts. He’s been in touch with Cal Fire and the Governor’s Office to make sure they’re all set.
Loewen also mentioned that they have more Type 1 firefighters and support staff on standby if needed. Plus, they’re prepping their water bombers and pilots to assist. It’s a tough situation, but it’s great to see everyone coming together to help out.
