It gets worse. When one woman reported some really offensive comments about rape, she was told off for swearing instead of getting help. Can you believe that?
Another woman said her coworkers just stood by while she was called names and threatened. After she complained, she felt like she was punished instead of supported. Her contract wasn’t renewed, while others kept their jobs.
These two women, who are keeping their names private for legal reasons, are leading a class action lawsuit. Their lawyer, Joshua Aylward, says this is a chance for other women to speak up without fear of losing their jobs.
He pointed out that BHP and Rio Tinto knew these workplaces were risky for women but still sent them there. And when they reported issues, they faced demotion or dismissal instead of help.
Now, thousands of women who faced similar issues since 2003 might be able to join the lawsuit. The companies will have to reach out to them, which is a big deal.
Rio Tinto said they take these claims seriously and are committed to creating a safe workplace. They even mentioned a review by a former Sex Discrimination Commissioner to show they’re trying to improve.
BHP echoed that sentiment, saying they regret any harassment experienced by their employees and are working hard to prevent it. But the lawyer says women in mining want real change, not just more reviews.
