Fredericton: So, there’s a weather bomb headed for Atlantic Canada, and it’s no joke! Special weather statements are already out, warning folks about heavy rain, ice, and some pretty wild winds. This low-pressure system is moving up from the eastern U.S. and is expected to pack a punch as it travels north.

Usually, we think of these weather bombs happening off the Pacific coast, but this one is sticking around on land. It’s going to undergo explosive cyclogenesis, which is just a fancy way of saying it’s going to get really intense as it moves into Quebec.

Expect a mix of impacts, from heavy rain to freezing rain, and those wind gusts could cause some power outages. On the flip side, we might also see some record-breaking warm temperatures for December, which is a bit of a surprise!

On Wednesday, northern New Brunswick will start with freezing rain, but as the warm front rolls in, rain will spread across the Maritimes by the afternoon. We could be looking at some seriously warm temperatures, with highs hitting double digits in the southern Maritimes.

Western Newfoundland will also see freezing rain, but it’ll switch to rain later on. Just a heads up, if you’re in areas expecting freezing rain, be careful out there—travel plans might need some adjusting.

As we move into Thursday, the winds are going to pick up, with gusts reaching close to 100 km/h in some areas. That’s when the risk of power outages really kicks in. Freezing rain will continue in northern Labrador, but it’ll warm up as the day goes on.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay could see its warmest December day ever, with a forecast high of 14°C! That’s a big deal, considering the previous record was 12.2°C back in 2023.

The cold front will sweep through New Brunswick early Thursday, bringing a quick burst of rain. Expect about 10-30 mm of rain from Wednesday to Friday, with some areas possibly getting even more.

By Thursday evening, temperatures will drop, and it’ll feel a lot colder. The storm will move out, but we might see some snow showers and squalls, especially in western Newfoundland. The weekend looks mostly fair, but another system is on the way early next week, so stay tuned!

Keep an eye on the weather updates, and make sure you’re prepared for whatever comes your way!
