Wythenshawe: So, Mike Amesbury, the MP from Cheshire, just pleaded guilty to assault. It all went down after he punched a guy named Paul Fellows outside a taxi rank. The whole thing was caught on camera, which is pretty wild.
It happened in the early hours of October 26, 2024. The court heard that Amesbury hit Fellows after a bit of back-and-forth. At first, he claimed he was just defending himself, but he later dropped that story.
After the court session, Amesbury told reporters he felt really bad about what happened. He said he was sorry to Fellows and his family, which is a decent thing to say, right?
He was all dressed up in a grey suit and red tie when he faced the judge. The prosecutor mentioned that both men had been drinking before the incident, which probably didn’t help things.
Apparently, Fellows recognized Amesbury and started talking to him about a bridge closure. But instead of chatting it out, Amesbury just punched him in the face. Not cool!
There’s footage showing the whole thing, and it’s pretty intense. After the first punch, Amesbury kept hitting Fellows while he was on the ground. He even said some pretty harsh stuff afterward.
Amesbury’s lawyer mentioned that he’s been feeling a lot of shame and embarrassment since the incident. He also talked about some security issues Amesbury has faced in the past, which might have played a role in how he reacted.
Now, Amesbury, who used to be a Manchester councillor, is sitting as an independent MP for Runcorn and Helsby after being suspended by Labour. He’s out on bail until his sentencing on February 24.
