Middlesbrough Council Plans Increased Investment in Local Services
Middlesbrough Council is set to boost funding for local services, enhancing community care and youth programs with new budget proposals.

These plans include extra grant funding from the Local Government Finance Settlement announced in December. The initial £2.361 million for services will now increase to £2.521 million.
This boost means a 20% increase for area care, covering street cleaning and grass cutting. Originally, a 10% rise was suggested.
Additionally, there are plans for a £4.367 million Middlesbrough Priorities Fund for 2025/26. This fund will support one-time projects to enhance the town and its services.
Mayor Cooke mentioned that last year was tough, but now they can invest in what matters to the community. He emphasized the need to use this one-time funding wisely.
Councillor Nicky Walker noted that they can’t rely on this extra funding for ongoing services until they hear about a three-year settlement later this year.
The council’s budget situation is also looking better. In September 2024, they expected a £1.382 million overspend, but the latest forecast shows a slight underspend.
The updated budget will be shared with the executive on February 5, and all councillors will vote on it on February 19. If approved, more details about the Middlesbrough Priorities Fund will follow.
