Norfolk: Michael Vick is stepping into a new role as the head football coach at Norfolk State. This is a big deal since it’s his first coaching gig after an impressive playing career.

The news broke when The Virginian-Pilot reported it, and a formal announcement is expected soon. Vick takes over from Dawson Odums, who had a tough run with a 15-30 record over four seasons.

Vick is a well-known name, having played quarterback at Virginia Tech and in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. Interestingly, he doesn’t have any formal coaching experience, but he’s confident about leading the team.

He’s got deep roots in the area, having grown up in Newport News, Virginia, and played high school football there. Vick had a standout college career, leading Virginia Tech to an impressive 11-1 record in his first season.

In 1999, he was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and led the Hokies to the national championship Sugar Bowl. He was drafted first overall by the Falcons in 2001 and quickly became a star.

Vick was known for his unique playing style, changing how quarterbacks approached the game. He made three Pro Bowls and was a top MVP candidate during his time with the Falcons.

However, his career took a major hit due to a dog-fighting scandal that led to prison time. After serving 21 months, he returned to the NFL and played for several teams before retiring in 2015.

Since then, he’s been working as a football analyst at Fox Sports. Now, he’s ready to take on this new challenge at Norfolk State, and fans are eager to see how he’ll do.
