East London: So, there was this pretty intense situation where police shot two dogs. The Independent Office for Police Conduct looked into it and decided the officers did nothing wrong.
It all kicked off when a woman and her dog were attacked by two Cane Corsos. The footage went viral, showing the police trying to handle the situation, which included tasering a homeless guy and shooting the dogs.
After checking everything out, the IOPC found no reason to blame the officers. They said the cops were just trying to keep everyone safe after the dogs had already caused injuries.
On May 7, 2023, police got called to Commercial Road because of the attack. The owner, Louie Turnbull, was in a tough spot. He didn’t want to give up his dogs, which were acting all wild.
Things escalated when one dog broke free, and the police had to shoot it. The second dog was also shot after it got away from a handler. Turns out, Turnbull had a history of trouble with his dogs and was banned from owning them for 20 years.
He ended up with a suspended sentence for having dogs that were out of control. The IOPC did ask the police to think about how they handle dog situations in the future, which makes sense.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway said the officers were in a tough spot and did their best to manage the situation. He emphasized that the police are trained to deal with aggressive dogs and always prioritize public safety.
It’s a sad situation all around, and no one wants to see animals get hurt. But the police were just trying to do their job in a really tricky situation.
