London: A judge recently told a police officer that he put himself in a dangerous position by using a choke hold on a suspect. This incident has drawn comparisons to the tragic case of George Floyd.

PC Rajan Solanki was trying to handcuff Shane Cogan at Whipps Cross Hospital when things got out of hand. Cogan was struggling, and Solanki warned him he would “choke out” the suspect during the scuffle.

Judge Michael Snow reminded Solanki of the serious implications of such actions, referencing the George Floyd case. He emphasized that even though this situation was different, the risks were still significant.

Prosecutor Ellen Alexander explained that Cogan had been taken to the hospital after police were called to his home. He was initially cuffed to a bed but was allowed to free one hand to use the restroom. When it was time to re-cuff him, he resisted.

Solanki, who is 28 and from Ilford, East London, repeatedly told Cogan to comply, using aggressive language. The court noted that Cogan was vulnerable due to mental health issues.

After admitting to assault, Solanki has been released on bail and is set to appear in court again on February 7. This incident has reignited discussions about police conduct and accountability.
