Greater Manchester: The cold snap is still gripping the UK after the coldest night of winter. The Met Office reported temperatures dropping to a bone-chilling -14.5C in northern Scotland.
In Greater Manchester, it was a frosty -7C at the Rostherne weather station, just south of Altrincham. Higher areas like Ramsbottom and Saddleworth are likely feeling even colder.
Today, January 10, the freezing weather continues, and it looks like it’s sticking around for a bit. There’s a yellow weather warning for ice in the western parts of the region until 10am, and more warnings could be on the way.
The UK Health Security Agency has extended its cold health alert until midday on January 14. This means health services might see a spike in demand due to the weather, with more people getting sick and even some expected fatalities.
In the eastern parts of Greater Manchester, like Oldham and Rochdale, there might be some sunshine peeking through. But most of the area will have sunny spells later in the morning. Expect highs of 3C in Oldham and Rochdale, while southern areas like Stockport and Trafford will be a bit chillier, around 1C.
Tonight, temperatures are set to drop again, possibly hitting -3C in Manchester. Trafford could see the coldest temps, with Sale dropping to -5C and Altrincham hitting -6C.
Looking ahead to Saturday, it’ll be sunny but still cold, with highs of 2C and lows of -1C in Manchester. Sunday brings a slight warm-up, with highs of 4C and lows of 3C, before we see even warmer weather next week.
