Met Office Updates UK Snow Forecast: When and Where It Will Fall
The Met Office has revised its snow forecast for the UK, predicting significant snowfall across various regions this weekend
Greater Manchester, UK, Snow, Weather Warning, Cold Alert
Greater Manchester: This weekend is shaping up to be quite chilly as January rolls in. The Met Office is predicting snow for many areas on Saturday and Sunday.
After some heavy rain caused flooding in Greater Manchester, the weather is taking a turn. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in effect across most of England.
This warning kicks in at noon on Saturday and lasts until late Sunday night. It was initially set to end on Monday morning but got adjusted to start earlier.
The warning mentions that heavy snow and freezing rain could disrupt travel and daily life. Areas like Greater Manchester, London, and parts of Wales are expected to see some snow.
As rain moves in from the southwest, it might start as snow in some places, especially in the north. While some areas may see quick snow, others could get a good amount, especially in Wales and northern England.
In fact, some regions could see up to 30-40 cm of snow in higher areas. With strong winds, this could lead to drifting snow, making things tricky.
As milder air moves in, some snow might turn to freezing rain, especially in Wales and the Midlands, which could create icy conditions.
On Sunday, Scotland will also get a snow warning, lasting until Monday morning. This could cause some disruptions as well.
Tom Morgan from the Met Office mentioned that while there’s a broad snow warning, it doesn’t mean every area will see snow. It’s more of a heads-up for potential impacts.
So, when can we expect the snow? The latest forecasts show that Scotland will start seeing snow early Saturday, while England will get hit later in the afternoon.
By midnight Sunday, snow will have spread to Greater Manchester and other parts of England. The wintry weather will continue moving north throughout the day.
As we head into Monday, the snow will start to ease up, but some northern areas might still see some flurries.
On top of the snow warnings, the UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold health alert. This alert is in place until January 8 and highlights the potential health risks from the cold.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa from the UKHSA stressed the importance of checking on vulnerable friends and family during this cold snap, as they could be at higher risk for health issues.
