London: So, the Met has decided to ban a pro-Palestine march from happening outside the BBC’s headquarters. They’re worried about a nearby synagogue, especially since it’s close to a Jewish holy day.
The protesters were all set to gather at Broadcasting House on January 18 and then march to Whitehall. This plan was shared publicly a while back by several groups, including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
But then, Scotland Yard stepped in and said they had to use the Public Order Act to stop the gathering. They think it could cause serious disruption to the synagogue just a short walk away.
Commander Adam Slonecki, who’s in charge of the police operation, explained that having a protest so close to a synagogue on a Saturday could really mess things up for people attending Shabbat services.
He mentioned that they listened to local community and business leaders, including those from the synagogue, before making this decision. They even reached out to the PSC to let them know about the ban.
The PSC didn’t take it lightly. They released a statement saying they were really upset about the police using what they called “repressive powers.” They pointed out that there hasn’t been any trouble at past marches near synagogues.
They also highlighted that many Jewish people have joined their marches and spoken at their events. The PSC is still talking with the Met and wants them to drop the ban.
Commander Slonecki said the PSC hasn’t changed their stance and is still encouraging people to gather in Portland Place. He mentioned that they had no choice but to enforce the ban given the situation.
He added that they’re hoping the PSC will come up with a different plan soon. The police are also considering how these protests have affected Jewish Londoners, who have been changing their plans and avoiding certain areas.
