Halifax: A big storm is heading for Atlantic Canada, and it’s going to be messy. This weekend, expect a mix of snow and freezing rain that could really mess up travel plans.
Weather alerts are already out, warning folks about the different types of precipitation and how bad the roads might get. A low-pressure system is moving up the U.S. East Coast and will intensify as it heads toward Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Heavy snow is expected Friday night into Saturday, with some areas around the Bay of Fundy and much of Nova Scotia getting 15-25 cm. Freezing rain could also hit parts of Newfoundland, making things slippery.
Drivers should definitely plan ahead. With the holidays coming up, many people will be on the road, so it’s crucial to stay updated on the weather and any warnings in your area. Windy conditions could lead to power outages, so make sure your devices are charged.
Before the big storm hits, there’s a smaller system bringing rain and snow on Thursday. Places like Moncton and Saint John will mostly see rain, but some higher spots might get snow.
On Friday night, the stronger system will move in, bringing more snow to southern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Some areas could see snow falling at rates of up to 5 cm per hour!
While southeastern Nova Scotia might see some rain, it could turn into a slushy mess. Ice pellets could also fall in Halifax, but the worst of it will be just east of the city.
Snow totals could reach 15-25 cm or more in some areas, and special weather statements are already warning about the significant snowfall.
Eastern Newfoundland might start with flurries, but rain will be the main event for the Avalon. Western Newfoundland will be buried in snow by Saturday morning, with freezing rain moving through central parts of the island.
Environment Canada is advising anyone traveling to be ready for tough weather conditions. Winds will be strong, increasing the risk of whiteouts and power outages.
Colder temperatures will follow, so any snow that falls will likely stick around for Christmas. Keep an eye on the weather updates as the weekend approaches!
