Merton Road Closures and Works for January and February with Traffic Lights
Merton will see various road closures and works in January and February, causing traffic disruptions across the area

Merton: There’s a lot going on with roadworks in Merton over the next couple of months. Expect some traffic jams and closures in places like Mitcham, New Malden, and Wimbledon.
The council is already saying sorry for the hassle and is urging drivers to find alternative routes when they can. They’ve put together a list of what’s happening, including some ongoing projects and new ones kicking off this month.
Outside No.6 Streatham Road, Mitcham
They’re putting in new cycle lanes and crossing points here. Work started on August 26 and should wrap up by February 28.
A217 London Road, Mitcham
Thames Water is doing a three-stage mains replacement on this busy road. Expect lane closures and temporary traffic lights. Work at the London Road junction with Baron Grove starts January 13 and ends January 24. Then, more work starts on January 27 and wraps up by February 7. Lastly, work at the junction with Broadway Gardens kicks off on February 24 and finishes by March 21.
Later this year, they’ll be back for more mains replacement work along London Road, starting April 30 and finishing June 17.
A236 Western Road, Mitcham
Temporary traffic lights are up for Thames Water’s mains replacement work between Bond Road and Raleigh Gardens. This started on November 12 and is expected to finish by April 29.
They’ll also need to close the road for a new gas service starting February 24, which should take about five working days.
Commonside East, Mitcham
Thames Water will be replacing water mains near Date Valley School in late spring, starting March 24 and lasting about 15 working days.
Consfield Avenue, New Malden
This road is currently closed for SGN to fix a leaking gas main. They started in January and expect to finish in about a week.
Coombe Lane, Raynes Park
Temporary traffic lights will be set up here for Thames Water to connect a new water line. Work starts January 14 and should take around 15 working days.
Crusoe Road, Mitcham
Merton Council will close this road for resurfacing work starting January 27, expected to take about 10 working days.
Cricket Green, Mitcham
Multi-way lights will be used at the junction with Bramcote Avenue for Thames Water to replace water mains. This work starts February 10 and should take about 12 working days.
Eastfields Road, Mitcham
This road will be closed for Network Rail to do track servicing and inspections at the level crossing. Work starts January 18 and will take two days. They’ll close it again on March 30 for two nights between 2am and 5am.
Grenfell Road, Mitcham
Grenfell Road is closed for carriageway and footway adjustments, with work starting January 6 and expected to finish by January 11.
Haydons Road, South Wimbledon
Lane closures will be in place for Merton Council work starting January 20, expected to take about 20 working days.
Haydons Road, South Wimbledon
Two-way temporary lights will be outside No.43 for Thames Water to replace a lead service pipe. This work starts January 27 and should take about five working days.
Hillcross Avenue, Morden
Two-way lights will also be set up here for SES Water to fix a defective patch outside No.96. Work starts January 13 and wraps up January 17.
Kingsley Road, Wimbledon
Kingsley Road will be closed next week for entry treatment work at the junction with Haydons Road. This starts January 13 and is expected to take five working days.
Kingston Road, Raynes Park
A contra-flow is in place on Kingston Road for MUA Electricity to do surface water and sewer connections. This started January 6 and should take about 10 working days.
Kingston and Kingswood Road, Wimbledon
Temporary traffic lights and a road closure will be in effect next month for crane operations at the nearby telephone exchange. This work starts February 2 and will take just one day.
Links Road, Mitcham
Merton Council will close Links Road for carriageway and footway adjustments starting January 13, expected to take about five working days.
Morden Road, South Wimbledon
Thames Water will need a lane closure here next month for a water meter exchange. This work starts February 20 and should take about two working days.
Martin Way, Morden
Temporary traffic lights will be set up for a new zebra crossing near Mostyn Road. Merton Council will also close Mostyn Road. This work starts February 17 and is expected to take about 10 working days.
West Barnes Lane, New Malden
A road closure will be in place at the New Malden Level Crossing for inspections and maintenance. Network Rail starts work January 20, expected to take four nights between 11pm and 5am. They’ll be back on February 8 for 24 hours and again on February 24 for five working days. Lastly, they’ll return on April 14 for four days between 11:50pm and 5am.
