Manchester: So, there’s this wild story about a people smuggling gang that just got busted. Eight members are facing some serious time after a woman was found stuffed in the glovebox of a car. Can you believe that?
Three of them were found guilty of helping with illegal immigration, and the other five might be in hot water too. It all started back in June 2022 when Border Force officers discovered the Vietnamese woman hidden behind the dashboard of a Vauxhall Vectra.
This whole thing led to a big investigation that uncovered a nasty smuggling network. They even found fake documents, over 20,000 illegal cigarettes, and a stash of cash worth £6,000. Talk about a shady operation!
Three gang members went through a lengthy trial after denying the charges. Redar Curtis, Jozef Kadet, and Khales Akram Jabar were all found guilty at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
Between 2022 and 2024, this gang was busy facilitating illegal immigration into the UK, using counterfeit IDs that were likely made in a forgery factory in Greece. It’s just crazy how far these guys went!
Some of the other gang members, including two brothers and a few others, admitted to their roles in the operation. They were all linked to various counts of conspiracy and fraud.
The woman was discovered when a driver named Jozef Balog crossed the UK border from France. He ended up pleading guilty and got a two-and-a-half-year sentence last January.
In another twist, Balog’s wife, Emily Etherington, was caught hiding another woman in her car just a month later. It seems like this whole family was in on it!
Now, all eight of them are set to appear in court again on January 29, where they’ll find out their fate. The Home Office is making it clear that these gangs are ruthless and only care about making money, putting lives at risk in the process.
Officials have been working hard with international police to take down this group, showing just how serious they are about tackling organized crime. It’s a real eye-opener about the lengths some will go to for profit.
