New York City: So, here’s the scoop. Lorna Beach-Mathura, who used to work for the Transit Police, is in a bit of a pickle. She’s the one accusing Mayor Adams of sexual assault, and now she’s filed for bankruptcy. This all happened last summer, and just days after that, she decided to sue NYC for a slip-and-fall incident that she claims happened in Queens.
According to the court papers, she filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Florida, saying she’s got around $333,000 in debt. That’s a lot, right? Then, just a few days later, she hit the city with a lawsuit in Brooklyn Federal Court, claiming she deserves at least $75,000 for her fall.
Now, this slip-and-fall happened back in October 2023, right before she made her assault claim against Adams. She was on her way to a ceremony at a temple when she tripped after getting off the subway. She described it as walking across a dirt area when she suddenly stumbled and fell hard onto the sidewalk.
She says the fall was pretty serious, leading to injuries in her wrist, hand, elbow, knee, neck, back, and chest. Ouch! Lorna claims the city should have fixed a dangerous spot on the sidewalk that caused her to fall. She even included photos in her lawsuit showing the uneven sidewalk.
But the city’s lawyers aren’t buying it. They argue that she should have known about the risks and that they owe her no duty. They’re looking to dismiss her case because they think her initial notice wasn’t specific enough.
The judge has asked both sides to give an update by the end of January. Meanwhile, Lorna, who lives in Miami, hasn’t responded to requests for comments about her bankruptcy or the slip-and-fall case.
Her bankruptcy filing is still in the works, and she owes a bunch of money to various creditors. She claims she has no regular income but does own a home worth about $380,000 and gets around $3,100 a month from retirement and Social Security.
As for the assault case, that’s still ongoing too. Lorna first brought it to light in November 2023, claiming Adams tried to force her into a sexual act back in 1993. Adams has denied all the allegations, saying he doesn’t even remember meeting her.
Interestingly, Lorna has had a few other legal battles in the past, including a lawsuit against American Airlines. She’s also written a self-help book about filing lawsuits on your own. Quite the story, huh?
