Marcy CO Named in Lawsuit Following Deadly Beating Incident
Marcy Correctional Facility faces scrutiny after a deadly inmate beating and multiple lawsuits alleging officer violence
Rochester, New York, Marcy Correctional Facility, Robert Brooks, Adam Bauer, Lawsuit
One of the officers involved in Brooks’ case is also named in a lawsuit from another inmate, Adam Bauer. Bauer says he was brutally attacked by multiple officers back in 2020. He was just trying to smoke a cigarette when things went south. The officer, Antonio Iodice, came in and demanded a search. Bauer did what he was told, but then he got punched and kicked by Iodice and others. It sounds pretty rough.
Bauer’s lawsuit describes how one officer even hit him with a clipboard, leaving a nasty gash on his forehead. After the beating, they took him to the infirmary, but instead of getting help, he was treated poorly. The officers claimed his injuries were self-inflicted, which is just wild.
And it gets worse. Bauer was threatened not to speak about the assault and ended up in solitary confinement. He was found guilty of something he didn’t do, but that was later reversed. It’s a mess, really.
Bauer’s lawyer is saying that the facility knew about the officers’ violent behavior but did nothing. It’s frustrating to think that if they had acted sooner, Brooks might still be alive. The attorney general even released a video of the incident, which has stirred up a lot of emotions.
There’s also another inmate, William Alvarez, who claims he faced similar violence in 2020. He was just cleaning when an officer sprayed him with chemicals and then slammed his head against a wall. It’s heartbreaking to hear how these guys are treated.
Recently, Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to fire the 14 officers involved in Brooks’ death. But the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) hasn’t commented on the ongoing lawsuits. It’s a tough situation, and many are hoping for justice for these inmates.
