Manze’s Pie and Mash Deptford to Close This January
Manze’s Pie and Mash in Deptford will close on January 25 due to owner George Mascall’s retirement after over a century of service
Deptford, London, Pie and Mash, George Mascall, Closure
Deptford: So, it looks like Manze’s Pie and Mash is calling it quits. They’ll be shutting down on January 25. The news came straight from their website, and it’s a bit of a bummer.
George Mascall, the owner, is retiring after years of serving up those delicious pies. He’s 65 now and feels it’s time to hang up his apron. Last year, he mentioned he wouldn’t be throwing a big farewell party, saying he’s just had enough of making pies.
This family-run spot has been around for over a century, started by Michael Manze, who sadly passed away in 2022. His daughter Sheila took over until she passed away at 91. It’s been a real family affair.
Back in the day, they had thirteen pie and mash shops across London, including Peckham. Now, it’s just this one, and it’s still run by George’s relatives.
The building itself is a Grade II listed gem, standing proud since 1914. It’s even been featured in some TV shows, like the BBC1 comedy Back to Life and the Only Fools and Horses spin-off, Rock and Chips.
Originally, the shop opened sometime between 1890 and 1914, when Michael moved to London from Italy. It’s got quite the history!
As for what happens to the building after they close, that’s still up in the air. The website mentioned that other family members have their own careers and aren’t interested in taking over.
If you want to grab one last pie with plenty of liquor, you’ve got until January 25. They’re expecting to be super busy, so you might want to get there early. They’ve been selling out faster than usual, and you don’t want to miss out!
In their own words, “Please make sure you get in pronto for your visit.” Sounds like a plan!
