Wavertree: A man named William Smith, 56, has been sentenced for neglecting his dog, Molly. She suffered from a severe, maggot-infested tumor that he ignored.

At Liverpool Magistrates Court, Smith received a ten-week prison sentence, suspended for a year. He’s also banned from owning animals for five years. The RSPCA got involved after a vet raised concerns about Molly’s condition when Smith brought her in after her death.

The vet described Molly’s state as shocking. She had a body condition score of just one out of nine, a huge ulcerated tumor, and was covered in urine. Smith had previously taken her to the vet for another tumor, but he didn’t follow up when advised.

A vet testified that Molly’s mass was not only painful but also likely caused her to suffer for weeks. Smith claimed he didn’t realize how bad it was because of her matted coat. He was also ordered to do unpaid work and pay a fine.

After the case, Inspector Showering expressed disbelief at the neglect. It was clear to anyone that Molly needed urgent care, and Smith’s failure to act led to her prolonged suffering.
