Manchester: Wow, December was a huge month for Manchester Airport! They reported a record-breaking 2.2 million passengers flying in and out, making it the busiest Christmas period ever.
Can you believe it? That’s a 10% increase from the previous record set just last year. The airport was buzzing, especially on December 29, when nearly 89,000 people passed through, likely heading off for New Year’s fun or coming back from holiday celebrations.
Amsterdam was the top destination, with over 110,000 travelers heading to or from the Dutch capital. Dubai and Dublin followed closely behind. It’s clear people were eager to travel!
During the month, 98% of passengers got through security in 15 minutes or less, and three-quarters waited under five minutes. That’s pretty impressive, right?
Looking ahead, Manchester Airport is gearing up for an exciting year. They’re wrapping up a £1.3 billion transformation project, and the new Terminal 2 is set to fully open later this year. The first phase opened in 2022, and the second phase will double its size!
There will be over 25 new shops, bars, and restaurants, including a Lego Store and the first Wetherspoon’s pub at the airport. Plus, they’re adding a new security hall and check-in desks, along with a stunning art installation made from one of the airport’s iconic chandeliers.
Chris Woodroofe, the Managing Director, shared his excitement about the record-breaking month and the upcoming changes. He emphasized how important the airport is for connecting people, especially during the festive season.
He’s looking forward to welcoming even more passengers this year and can’t wait for everyone to experience the new Terminal 2. Sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to at Manchester Airport!
