Hainault: A man was rushed to the hospital after a house fire early Saturday morning. Firefighters rescued him from the ground floor of a home on Trelawney Road.
The London Ambulance Service took him to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire crews were called at 2:22 AM, sending six fire engines and about 40 firefighters from nearby stations.
The fire likely started from an unattended candle that ignited flammable items. The house had many possessions stored inside, making it hard for the man to escape.
Station Commander Graham Beers noted that hoarding can block exit routes during a fire. He emphasized that this can make fires more dangerous for both occupants and firefighters.
With rising living costs, people may use candles for cooking and lighting, increasing fire risks. The Brigade encourages those with hoarding tendencies to seek help and use the Home Fire Safety Checker.
Beers also mentioned that a smoke alarm was present but didn’t work due to a flat battery. He urged everyone to have working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and to test them regularly.
