Ilford: A tragic incident unfolded when a man was found dead in a park. Brian Shields, 60, was discovered unresponsive at Orchard Playing Fields on October 20. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marius Ziugzda, 48, was found guilty of his murder after a two-week trial. The court heard that both men were living rough in the area. Brian suffered severe injuries from blunt force trauma, indicating he was attacked with multiple punches or kicks.

Detective Sergeant David Brooks mentioned that despite Ziugzda claiming they were friends, he carried out a brutal and fatal assault. The investigation team worked hard, and many witnesses stepped forward to help.

On the morning of the incident, police received a call about an unresponsive man. When they arrived, Ziugzda approached the scene, saying he had been with Brian the night before. He even made a chilling comment about killing him.

Officers noticed scuff marks on Ziugzda’s hands. When questioned, he claimed the police misunderstood him. He said he left Brian to get water and returned to find him uninjured, but CCTV footage later showed otherwise.

Witnesses reported hearing loud shouting from the area around 11 PM, which added to the evidence against Ziugzda. He was charged shortly after and is now awaiting sentencing.
