North Shields: Just before 11:25 AM today, police got a call about a two-car crash on Norham Road North, close to Middle Engine Lane.
A grey Peugeot 407 was heading south when it collided with a white Honda Civic coming from the opposite direction. The reasons for the crash are still unclear.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but sadly, the driver of the Peugeot, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead right there.
His family has been notified and is receiving support from specially trained officers during this tough time.
The Honda driver stayed at the scene and is helping the police with their investigation.
Currently, the road is closed in both directions between the roundabout after the New York bypass and Middle Engine Lane.
Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit is looking into what happened and is asking for anyone who saw the crash to come forward.
They’re especially interested in hearing from drivers in the area at the time or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage that could help.
Sergeant Alex Partington from Northumbria Police expressed condolences, saying, “Tragically, a man has lost his life today, and our thoughts are with his family.”
He added, “This area sees a lot of traffic, so we urge anyone who witnessed the incident to reach out.”
