North Yorkshire: A man put his life on the line to save his dog after it fell through the ice at Marfield Wetlands, near Masham. It was a scary moment for the 20-year-old dog walker.
On that chilly Wednesday, January 15, the dog slipped into the icy water, and without thinking, the man jumped in to rescue his furry friend. Unfortunately, he also fell through the ice.
Luckily, emergency services, including an air ambulance, arrived quickly. They managed to pull both the man and his dog out of the freezing water. The man was taken to the hospital for a check-up, while the dog was found to be cold but otherwise okay.
A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police expressed relief that the dog was safe. They also reminded everyone that if a dog falls through the ice, it’s best not to follow them in.
They pointed out that many people who try to rescue their pets end up in serious trouble themselves. The ice can be deceptive, and what seems thick near the edge can be dangerously thin further out.
Once someone falls in, they can quickly disappear under the surface, making it hard for rescuers to help. The freezing water can also make it tough for anyone to swim or stay afloat.
So, if your dog gets into trouble on the ice, stay calm. Don’t go onto the ice yourself. Instead, try calling your dog back to safety. If they can’t get out, don’t hesitate to call 999 for help.
