Cornwall: A man named Jordan Kelwick, also known as Gary Gary, died after being allowed unaccompanied leave from the hospital. This happened on July 28, 2023, near Bude when he fell from a cliff.

The inquest at Truro Coroner’s Court is looking into his death. Jordan, 24, struggled with treatment-resistant schizophrenia and psychosis for years.

Between December 2020 and May 2023, he was admitted to the hospital six times. Each stay lasted three to four months, but he would relapse shortly after returning home.

In May 2023, Jordan was detained again after expressing suicidal thoughts. He stayed at Bodmin Hospital until his death.

On July 28, staff allowed him 30 minutes of unescorted leave, believing he was calm. He wanted to go to Bodmin town center but was only permitted to visit a nearby garage.

Jordan left the hospital at 1:25 PM, expected back by 1:55 PM. Instead, he took a taxi to Bude.

At 2:50 PM, staff reported him missing after searching the area. They couldn’t find him.

After arriving in Bude, Jordan called his stepfather, expressing feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. Tragically, he then fell from a cliff.

The coastguard was called, but he was pronounced dead at 4:44 PM. A post-mortem confirmed he died from injuries consistent with a fall.

Jordan’s stepfather described him as a kind and gifted person. He had a bright future ahead but struggled with mental health issues.

In the months leading to his death, Jordan sent messages to his family about the voices he heard. They were unaware he wanted unaccompanied leave.

His stepfather believes Jordan was not in a state to make such decisions alone. The inquest continues to explore the circumstances surrounding his death.
