Major Transport Upgrades Could Revive Somerset Town’s Fortunes
Watchet’s economy faces challenges, but new transport plans aim to boost local businesses and enhance community life

Watchet: The town is looking to bounce back with some exciting transport upgrades. The local economy has taken a hit since the B3191 Cleeve Hill closed to vehicles in January 2023 due to coastal erosion concerns. This road was a vital link for locals and tourists alike.
To tackle this, the Watchet Task Force was formed. They’re working on a plan to help local businesses and redesign the town center. The goal is to make it more appealing and functional for everyone.
They recently published a strategy that outlines several key changes to the road network. This plan aims to ease traffic flow and create a friendlier environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
Five main areas in the town center have been identified for upgrades. These changes will not only improve traffic but also enhance the overall look and feel of Watchet.
First up is the junction of Swain Street and Harbour Road. They want to replace the T-junction with a mini-roundabout. This should slow down traffic and make it safer for pedestrians.
Next is Harbour Road, which connects to the marina. The plan is to narrow the road to give pedestrians more space while keeping parking spots intact. Plus, they’ll plant new trees and flowers to brighten things up.
Then there’s the Swain Street car park. They’re looking to add murals and greenery to make it more inviting for shoppers. Some parking spaces might be sacrificed for this, but it’ll be worth it.
Swain Street itself will get a facelift too. They’ll resurface it with bright colors to make it more welcoming and allow outdoor seating for businesses.
Lastly, the Market Street car park will be revamped to create a vibrant community space. They’re considering reopening or repurposing the existing toilet block and adding more greenery and seating.
The Watchet Task Force is excited about these changes and plans to seek funding to bring them to life. They’re also looking for community input as they move forward.
Local MP Rachel Gilmour is pushing for funding to reopen the B3191, which she believes will improve social mobility in the area. While the road has reopened for pedestrians and cyclists, the future for vehicles remains uncertain.
Somerset Council has stated that it’s up to them how to use the new highway maintenance funding. They’re focused on local needs and priorities, which is a good sign for Watchet.
So, it looks like Watchet is on the path to revitalization, and the community is eager to see these plans come to fruition!
