Stockport: Parts of the A6 are shutting down tonight to build a new pedestrian crossing. This will connect the transport interchange with the town center.

The work kicks off at 7 PM and will close lanes on Wellington Road in both directions. It’ll last until 5 AM tomorrow. Don’t worry, there will be signs to guide you around the detours.

Good news for bus users! The Heaton Lane bus gate will remain open. Southbound traffic on the A6 will be redirected to Travis Brow Link Road and King Street West.

There will be more overnight closures coming up to finish the job, and the council promises to keep everyone updated on the schedule.

This new crossing will link the A6 viaduct over Daw Bank, connecting Viaduct Park and the Hatworks Museum. It’s a great step for pedestrians and cyclists.

Other improvements include wider footways on the A6 for a shared footway/cycleway, a taller railing for safety, and the removal of a temporary bus stop that was there during the interchange construction.

Council transport chief, Grace Baynham, mentioned that this project is part of their commitment to sustainable travel. It follows recent upgrades at Stockport Interchange and better connections in St Peter’s Square.

She added that the new crossing will link to the Interchange’s bridgescape, making it easier to get to the train station and the helix ramp. It’s all about enhancing sustainable travel in the town center!
