Queensland: Authorities are really stepping up their game this summer. With more Aussies hitting the water on jet skis, they’re cracking down on reckless boating behavior.
They want to prevent accidents and injuries, so several states are launching campaigns to remind everyone about water safety. They’re focusing on speeding, improper licensing, and drinking while driving.
In New South Wales, jet ski ownership has skyrocketed. They now have around 90,000 owners! While jet skis are a blast, they can also be pretty dangerous if not handled right.
A spokesperson mentioned that most incidents come from poor judgment and speeding. In the last year alone, there were 1,700 jet ski violations in NSW.
Over in Queensland, there are more than a million recreational boat license holders. Starting December 14, police will enforce the “fatal five” rules, which include avoiding drugs and alcohol, speeding, and ensuring safety gear is on board.
Recently, locals in Noosa were upset about some young guys acting recklessly in a boat. One resident shared a video of a boat spinning out of control, which is exactly the kind of behavior authorities want to stop.
Speeding is still the top offense on the water, especially during busy holiday times. Police are targeting known trouble spots and are serious about keeping everyone safe.
Drink driving on boats is also a big issue, and it can be even more dangerous than on the road. Brisbane Water Police will be keeping a close eye on this during the school holidays.
Down in Victoria, authorities are also warning about jet ski dangers. They remind everyone to follow safety rules, like keeping speeds down and wearing the right life jackets.
Jet ski sales hit a record high last year, with nearly 10,000 sold. Although sales dipped recently, discounts and the number of jet skis already out there are causing crowded boat ramps.
A Sydney guy recently vented about the chaos at boat ramps, saying it’s getting harder to launch boats with so many jet skis around. It looks like this summer could be a wild one on the water!
