Leicester: Big changes are on the way for landline phones in Leicestershire. BT is planning to switch off analogue technology. This change will affect all customers in the area.
BT says the old analogue system is fragile after 40 years. They will replace it with a new system that uses broadband for calls. This means no more traditional phone sockets.
By January 2027, all UK homes will need to switch to digital. BT is visiting Leicestershire to explain what this means for residents. They want to make sure everyone understands the changes.
Vicky Hicks from BT mentioned they will meet customers in person. They will answer questions about the upgrade from analogue to digital landlines. The landline will still be available, just in a new way.
Switching is easy. Just plug your phone into a broadband router instead of a wall socket. This change will also help block spam calls. BT blocks around 15,000 scam calls daily.
Vulnerable customers and those using telecare systems will not switch until Spring 2025. BT is also providing free battery backup units for those with special needs. This ensures calls can still be made during power outages.
BT will hold events to discuss the switch. The first event is at Dobbies Garden Centre in Rothley on February 13 and 14. Other events will take place in Market Harborough, Hinckley, and Loughborough.
