Washington D.C.: On Saturday, President Joe Biden gave out the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S. Among the honorees were basketball legend Magic Johnson and soccer superstar Lionel Messi.
During the ceremony, they highlighted Johnson’s incredible basketball career, mentioning his MVP awards, Olympic gold medals, and his Hall of Fame status. They also praised his work in business and his advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness.
When Biden put the medal around Johnson’s neck, the 6-foot-9 star had to squat down, which got a good laugh from everyone there. It was a light-hearted moment that showed the warmth of the occasion.
As for Messi, he couldn’t make it to the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts. His team said he was really honored to receive the award and hopes to meet Biden soon.
Other notable recipients included chef José Andrés, U2’s Bono, and actor Denzel Washington, among many others. Some were honored posthumously, like civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer.
