Buenos Aires: So, Edmundo González, the opposition leader from Venezuela, is gearing up for a big trip to the U.S. He’s hoping to chat with President Biden next week. This comes right before he heads back to Venezuela after that election that many say was rigged.
González, who the U.S. sees as the rightful winner of the July vote, shared that he’s still working out the details of his agenda in Washington. He’s trying to rally support for his claim to power before Maduro kicks off his third term on January 10. Maduro declared himself the winner without showing any proof, which has raised a lot of eyebrows.
He mentioned to reporters that he’s looking forward to a conversation with Biden and is waiting for more info about the new authorities. It’s a bit tricky, though, since Biden is busy with other commitments, including a trip to New Orleans after a tragic attack there.
González had to flee to Spain back in September due to a crackdown on dissent. The Maduro regime even put out a $100,000 bounty for info leading to his capture, plastering his face on wanted posters around Caracas. Talk about a tense situation!
He’s also planning to visit Panama and the Dominican Republic while he’s in the region. He’s determined to take office in Venezuela, saying, “By whatever means necessary, I’m going to be there.” It’s clear he’s not backing down.
With Trump coming back to the White House soon, it’ll be interesting to see how the U.S. approach changes. Trump’s past tough stance on Maduro might come back into play, but he could also be tempted to strike a deal regarding Venezuelan migrants. It’s a complicated web for sure!
