Luis Garcia expressed frustration over VAR’s failure to review a late penalty for Liverpool against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool, Tottenham, Luis Garcia, VAR, Carabao Cup
London: So, former Liverpool player Luis Garcia is pretty upset about VAR after Liverpool’s recent match against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup. The Reds lost, and now they have to turn things around at Anfield next month if they want a shot at Wembley.
In this game, Lucas Bergvall scored the only goal late in the second half. But Liverpool’s coach, Arne Slot, was fuming because Bergvall should have been sent off earlier for a bad tackle on Kostas Tsimikas. He was already on a yellow card but somehow avoided a second one.
But that wasn’t the only thing that got Garcia riled up. In stoppage time, Liverpool was pushing for an equalizer when Curtis Jones got clipped in the box by Dejan Kulusevski. The referee, Stuart Atwell, didn’t call a penalty, and VAR backed him up, which really ticked off Garcia.
He took to social media, saying, “Things I don’t understand nowadays with VAR. Just check it!!” It’s clear that Liverpool fans are feeling the heat over this decision.
Interestingly, this match also marked a new step for VAR in English football. For the first time, the referee announced an overturned decision to the crowd after Dominic Solanke’s goal was ruled out for offside. Some people liked this new approach, but Slot wasn’t convinced it was necessary.
He pointed out that everyone could see why Solanke’s goal was disallowed, and he thought it would have been more useful for the referee to explain why Bergvall didn’t get a second yellow card instead. It’s a bit of a mess, and Slot thinks it’s too early to judge the new VAR system based on just one game.
