New York City: So, there’s this guy, Luigi Mangione, who’s been charged with killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson. Turns out, he wasn’t even a client of the company. Crazy, right? Police think he might have targeted them because they’re such a big player in the healthcare game.
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, they found some evidence suggesting Mangione knew about UnitedHealthcare’s big investor conference happening in the city. He even had a note mentioning the company when he was caught in Pennsylvania.
Kenny pointed out that Mangione never had any insurance with them, but he did refer to UnitedHealthcare as one of the largest corporations in America. That might explain why he went after them.
UnitedHealthcare is a major player in the U.S. market, being the largest health insurer, but it’s not actually the fifth largest company overall. Mangione is currently sitting in jail in Pennsylvania, having been arrested after being spotted at a McDonald’s.
His lawyer claims Mangione plans to plead not guilty and hasn’t seen any solid evidence tying him to the crime. Interestingly, Mangione comes from a well-off family and graduated from an Ivy League school.
He had been posting about his struggles with chronic back pain and even had surgery last year, which he said went well. Now, police are looking into his social media posts, especially since he had some strong opinions about the healthcare system and corporate America.
Oh, and his family reported him missing back in November, which adds another layer to this whole situation.
