Lucy Letby Case: Experts Challenge Key Evidence on Victim Skin Discoloration

An expert panel disputes key evidence in the Lucy Letby case, raising doubts about skin discoloration linked to alleged crimes.

Chester: A panel of medical experts is questioning evidence against Lucy Letby. They say skin discoloration in victims may not mean what prosecutors claim.

During her trial, prosecutors argued that skin mottling indicated air was injected into the babies’ veins. But Dr. Shoo Lee, a retired neonatologist, disagrees.

Dr. Lee believes the prosecution misinterpreted his research on skin mottling. He stated that there were no cases of discoloration linked to air injections.

At a recent news conference, he emphasized that the idea of air embolism based on skin rashes lacks evidence. The panel also suggested other natural causes for the deaths.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Cases Review Commission announced it will review Letby’s case. This follows a request from her lawyers.

MP Sir David Davis called Letby’s convictions a major injustice. Letby, 35, is serving fifteen life sentences for murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others.

She worked as a nurse in the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital. Prosecutors claimed she used various methods, including injecting air into the babies’ bloodstreams.

Letby has tried to appeal her convictions twice but was unsuccessful. Her lawyer plans to challenge the reliability of the lead prosecution expert’s evidence.

A public inquiry into Letby’s actions is ongoing, with findings expected later this year. Detectives are also reviewing the care of around 4,000 babies treated at the hospital during her employment.

Letby has been interviewed about the investigation into baby deaths and collapses. She continues to assert her innocence.

This story is still developing, and more updates will follow.
