Netherlee: Angus, a 15-year-old dog, was chilling in his garden when disaster struck. A massive tree came crashing down, but luckily, his owner, John Johnston, got him inside just in time.
John, who’s 66, described the winds as feeling like they were hitting 100 mph. The Met Office had even issued a rare red alert for strong gales that day.
He let Angus out for a quick toilet break and was in the kitchen when he heard a loud crack. Moments later, the tree fell right where Angus had been. Talk about a close call!
Angus is deaf and has some health issues, so John was really relieved he wasn’t hurt. He said, “He’s had enough to deal with without a tree falling on him.”
While there was some damage to the fence and gate, John felt it could have been much worse. He’s been wanting the council to take down those trees for years, and maybe now they’ll finally do it.
As for the storm, forecasters warned it was a “danger to life” with winds expected to reach up to 90 mph. They advised everyone to stay safe and follow precautions.
The Met Office confirmed that the winds would ease later in the evening, but the damage was already done for many.
