Bristol: Maya Jama took over as the host of Love Island in 2023, and wow, has she made waves! Fans absolutely love her, and she’s been getting tons of praise since stepping into the role.

But before all this fame, Maya had a pretty tough upbringing. She grew up in Bristol with her parents, Hussein and Sadie. Her dad had a rough time, often in and out of prison, which made things challenging for her.

At just 12, Maya decided to stop visiting her dad in prison. She mentioned in an interview that she didn’t dwell on it too much. Instead, she learned to laugh about her situation. “I don’t want pity,” she said, and that’s a strong mindset!

Things got even tougher when her boyfriend, Rico, was tragically killed in a shooting back in 2011. Maya felt a lot of guilt over it, which is heartbreaking. But she pushed through and moved to London in 2012 to chase her dreams in media.

Starting out was rough. She was broke and had to pretend she lost her travel card just to get to work. She joked about living on cheap chicken-shop meals every day. But she hustled hard and eventually landed a job at Jump Off TV.

From there, she hosted a music video countdown and got her foot in the door with MTV. Soon enough, she was hosting big shows like Simon Cowell’s Walk the Line and the BRITs. Talk about a glow-up!

Maya didn’t stop there. She launched her skincare line, MIJ, which sold out super fast. Plus, she’s done clothing collections with PrettyLittleThing and became the face of Dolce & Gabbana this year. She’s also an ambassador for brands like Adidas and Rimmel London.

On the personal side, Maya dated rapper Stormzy for four years before they split in 2019. They tried to make it work again in 2023 but ended things amicably in July 2024. They still respect each other, which is nice to see.

Now, she’s on the judging panel for The Masked Singer UK and is gearing up for the second series of Love Island: All Stars. Maya’s journey is truly inspiring, showing that you can rise above challenges and shine bright!
