New Orleans: So, the Attorney General of Louisiana just announced a full review of the city’s security plans. This comes after that awful truck attack on New Year’s Day that tragically killed 14 people and injured many more.
AG Liz Murrill is getting the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation involved to look into how security was handled during the New Year’s Eve celebrations and the Sugar Bowl. She talked to the governor before making this call.
There’s been a lot of criticism about how New Orleans handled security. They had anti-vehicle barriers but didn’t use them. Some other barriers were taken out because they were broken. It’s a real mess.
Murrill said, “The People of Louisiana deserve answers.” She wants to figure out what went wrong and how to prevent this from happening again. It’s super important to get a clear picture of what happened.
She mentioned that the review will cover everything from planning to execution of security measures. They’ll look at funding, risk assessments, and security policies too.
Police and city officials are on board with this review, which is good to hear. Murrill also thanked the New Orleans Police Department for their quick response during the attack. Their actions likely saved more lives.
She hopes the findings will help law enforcement and the city improve safety for everyone, especially with Mardi Gras coming up.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick called the attacker a “terrorist” who was determined to cause harm. She believes he would have struck somewhere else if not for Bourbon Street.
In response to the attack, President Biden has upgraded Mardi Gras to the highest security level, which means more federal support will be available. This includes things like explosive detection teams and cyber risk assessments.
